Anxiety and fear, different in scientific interpretation, are both interchangeable in common parlance. Phobia is also of the same type, another form of anxiety. It is defined as fear that persists or is irrational. The word fear itself is defined as an emotional or psychological response to external threats as they are seen by the patient. The outside threat may be a crash about to take place or a run away car.

Types of disorders

Different kinds of anxiety disorders include (1) panic disorder (2) agoraphobia (3) social anxiety disorder (4) simple phobia (5) generalized anxiety disorders (6) obsessive compulsive disorder (7) post traumatic stress disorder. Panic disorder is a period of intense fear or a psychological distress that erupts suddenly and lasts for about half an hour with symptoms like trembling, asphyxia, and palpitations of the heart, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyper ventilation, tingling sensation and a chocking feeling.

In social anxiety disorder the patient suffers from fear, worry related to social situations, worries about how he is perceived or evaluated by others. Being a psychiatric disorder it requires psychiatric treatment. Specific fear is caused when the anxiety disorder is unreasonable or an irrational feeling is caused due to exposure to definite objects or situations. The affected person avoids direct contact with the object or situation.

The general anxiety disorder is a condition where there is excessive and un-controllable worrying about normal day to day activities. The intensity is disproportionate as also its duration to the actual source of worry and it disrupts the patient’s daily life.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is truly a psychiatric disorder that manifests itself in a number of different ways. It is also mainly related to obsessive thinking and compulsions used to concentrate the fixation. At length, the post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder resulting from exposure to or confrontation with stressful experiences considered highly traumatic by the patient.

It is in the nature of an anxiety disorder to debilitate the patient chronically. It may begin at an early age or attack like a bolt from the blue after a triggering event occurs. There are, however, a number of medications and drugs to treat the disorder and patients need not despair but cheer themselves up.
